LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Iconic movie costumes worn by Charlie Chaplin, Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe will go up for sale in June from a collection belonging to fellow actress Debbie Reynolds, California auction house Profiles in History said on Thursday.

Monroe's subway dress from "The Seven Year Itch," Judy Garland's blue cotton dress and ruby red slippers from "The Wizard of Oz" and Charlie Chaplin's "Tramp" bowler hat are among the 3,500 items up for auction in Beverly Hills on June 18.

Barbra Streisand's sleeveless gold velvet, jeweled gown from "Hello, Dolly" -- said to be the most expensive dress ever made for a film -- will also be up for sale as will Audrey Hepburn's Ascot dress from "My Fair Lady" and Julie Andrews' costumes from "The Sound of Music."

Reynolds, 79, who starred in such films as "Singin' in the Rain" and "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," has been collecting film memorabilia for more than 50 years.

She got more serious about it when in 1970, Hollywood movie studio MGM announced it was going to auction off everything except its real estate. Reynolds, who had been under contract at MGM, purchased many items and continued to save as many pieces as she could over the years.

Her collection was due to have been housed in a planned museum, her spokeswoman said. But the project fell through and Reynolds has decided to sell her collection.

The collection will be on view to the public at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills in early June before the auction on June 18.

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - Strong demand for Brazilian abstract art and works by Colombia's Fernando Botero propelled Sotheby's to its best-selling auction of Latin American art with more than $21.6 million in sales.

Botero's painting "A Family," which fetched $1.4 million, was the top seller at Wednesday's sale and his "Man on a Horse" set a record for a bronze sculpture for the artist at auction -- at $1.17 million.

Overall, Botero works accounted for a third of the total sale, which topped Sotheby's $21 million Latin American sale record, set in the spring 2008 before the financial crisis sent art markets into a tailspin.

"In every crisis, there is somebody who makes money and they have to spend it," said Carmen Melian, Sotheby's Latin American art chief. "I think also the big shock is over ... some people are starting to buy and the whole cycle (of art buying) starts all over again.

Unusually for Botero at auction, three decades of his work were represented, including earlier art seen as political like the 1975 "El Presidente," which fetched $266,500.

The evening's most intense bidding was for Brazilian abstract sculptures made of wood.

Brazilian Cildo Meireles' 1982 sculpture "In-Mensa" sold for $518,000, an artist auction record. It fuses polished brown wood into hybrid furniture, tricking the eye into alternatively identifying what parts are chairs or tables.

"Relief 13/83," Brazilian Sergio Camargo's sculpture, dating from 1965, fetched $842,500.

Sotheby's said Brazil's art market is booming. The nation's strengthening currency, the real, makes art priced in U.S. dollars cheaper in comparison to the country's own currency.

Asian buyers snatched the top-priced Boteros, including "A Family," which juxtaposes father and son with blank expressions as mother and daughter gaze at something unseen with their faces turned in opposite directions and an infant tugs on the mother's skirt.

South Asian buyers figured prominently in the auction with Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam well represented. Many participated in the auction online.

The sale also set auction records for Mexico's painter, Dr. Atl, whose landscape, "La Nube (The Rain)," went for $326,500. Uruguayan Pedro Figari's "Baile Criollo" fetched $146,500, a record for an oil on board by the artist at auction.

Mexican artist Mathias Goeritz's sculpture, "Project for Energia," went for $86,500, a record for a bronze by the artist at auction.

Sotheby's sees HK watch sales up one-third in 2011

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Sotheby's, the world's largest publicly traded auction house, expects its auction sales for watches to increase by a quarter this year in Hong Kong, now its biggest market for such auctions, an executive said on Tuesday.

Sotheby's, which competes with the world's largest auction house, privately-held Christie's, is seeing Hong Kong as an increasingly important market as the auction market is now its biggest for watches, fine wines and Chinese art.

It has sold a total of HK$73 million ($9.6 million) worth of wrist watches so far in 2011, and expects the current pace to continue through the rest of 2011.

"I think it's very durable to repeat that in the next season," Vanessa Herrera, director of China and Southeast Asia and Head of Watches Department, told the Reuters Global Luxury Summit in Hong Kong.

Sotheby's sold HK$109.3 million worth of watches in Hong Kong in 2010.

"For us, we are constantly getting new blood, new people coming to transact. In our sales, 30 percent of the buyers are new," said Herrera, who herself wears a Rolex. "Watches are a very affordable luxury."

Last year, Sotheby's in Hong Kong, which specializes in modern wrist watches made from the 1970s and coming from famous brands, such as Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet, sold watches totaling about $12.2 million.

In Hong Kong, Sotheby's achieved record sales of HK$3.49 billion, driven by sales of Chinese art, watches, wine and jewelry. The Hong Kong operations are its biggest auction market for wine and watches.

Sotheby's reported net income of $2.4 million for the first quarter of 2011, reversing a loss of $2.2 million a year earlier.

Last year proved one of the best, with Christie's posting a record $5 billion in sales and Sotheby's making $774 million in revenue -- six times more than 2009 and its second highest ever apart from 2007. It was a far cry from 2009's dire drop in sales amid the global financial crisis.

New collectors from Russia, Hong Kong, mainland China, Singapore, Qatar and South America have also upped the ante, flush with cash and ready to create instant collections.

Sotheby's shares have fallen 9.5 percent so far this year.

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Sotheby's, the world's largest publicly traded auction house, expects its auction sales for watches to increase by a quarter this year in Hong Kong, now its biggest market for such auctions, an executive said on Tuesday.

Sotheby's, which competes with the world's largest auction house, privately-held Christie's, is seeing Hong Kong as an increasingly important market as the auction market is now its biggest for watches, fine wines and Chinese art.

It has sold a total of HK$73 million ($9.6 million) worth of wrist watches so far in 2011, and expects the current pace to continue through the rest of 2011.

"I think it's very durable to repeat that in the next season," Vanessa Herrera, director of China and Southeast Asia and Head of Watches Department, told the Reuters Global Luxury Summit in Hong Kong.

Sotheby's sold HK$109.3 million worth of watches in Hong Kong in 2010.

"For us, we are constantly getting new blood, new people coming to transact. In our sales, 30 percent of the buyers are new," said Herrera, who herself wears a Rolex. "Watches are a very affordable luxury."

Last year, Sotheby's in Hong Kong, which specializes in modern wrist watches made from the 1970s and coming from famous brands, such as Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet, sold watches totaling about $12.2 million.

In Hong Kong, Sotheby's achieved record sales of HK$3.49 billion, driven by sales of Chinese art, watches, wine and jewelry. The Hong Kong operations are its biggest auction market for wine and watches.

Sotheby's reported net income of $2.4 million for the first quarter of 2011, reversing a loss of $2.2 million a year earlier.

Last year proved one of the best, with Christie's posting a record $5 billion in sales and Sotheby's making $774 million in revenue -- six times more than 2009 and its second highest ever apart from 2007. It was a far cry from 2009's dire drop in sales amid the global financial crisis.

New collectors from Russia, Hong Kong, mainland China, Singapore, Qatar and South America have also upped the ante, flush with cash and ready to create instant collections.

Sotheby's shares have fallen 9.5 percent so far this year.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Late author Michael Crichton, whose novels have been adapted into movies such as "Jurassic Park," will have a new posthumous novel "Micro" published on November 22, publisher HarperCollins said on Monday.

Crichton had only written a third of the thriller when he died of cancer in November 2008. Writer Richard Preston, best known for such scientific suspense novels as "The Hot Zone" and "The Cobra Event," was chosen by the publisher and the Crichton estate to complete the novel, the publisher said.

"Micro" is about graduates students working in Hawaii for a mysterious biotech company. They end up cast out into the rain forest and forced to fend for themselves with only their scientific expertise and wits to protect them.

Besides the unfinished manuscript, Preston also had access to the outline, a bibliography of nearly 100 books and DVDs, as well as notes and research.

"I was driven by a desire to honor the work and imagination of one of our time's most visionary and creative authors," Preston said in a statement.

Crichton was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2008 and died that same year at the age of 66. He is perhaps best known for "Jurassic Park," for which he also adapted the screenplay that was directed by Steven Spielberg. His follow-up book, "The Lost World," was also adapted for the big screen.

Other Crichton novels adapted for the big screen include "The Andromeda Strain," "Sphere," "Disclosure," "Rising Sun" and "Timeline." Crichton was also the creator and executive producer of the long-running TV series, "ER."
